The White Rabia Rug with Black Diamonds is a beautifully crafted Berber rug that has been handmade by the women of the Berber tribes in the high Atlas mountains of Morocco. The mountains sit at a height of 1780 metres above sea level and a ten-hour drive from Casablanca.Tracing back as far as the Paleolithic era, the ancient weaving technique has been passed down through the generations and has been well preserved due to the tribes relative isolation in the Northern Middle Atlas. In the past these rugs were woven as sleeping mats, which explains their long and narrow dimensions as well as their thick pile as the Berber tribes used them to insulate themselves from some of the lowest temperatures in Africa.
This rug has a natural cream wool colour with an amazing black diametric pattern.
The rugs are made entirely of pure sheep's wool of the highest quality as the sheep have prospered and developed a thicker coat in the colder, higher elevations and tribes selected only the softest and silkiest wool over a period of harvesting that could go on for several years. The materials are hand-washed and naturally dyed from saffron yellow, to wild mint green, and from pomegranate and henna. Not following any strict pattern, each rug is truly unique and an embodiment of the experiences and interpretations of the artisan who made it. Drawing on nature, love, childbirth and womanhood these rugs are symbolic as well as artistic and were historically seen as a bearer of good luck to promote happiness and welfare.
Despite being around for over 1000 years the style is an enduring classic due to the neutral designs and colours which make it a style staple for any interior. Considered to be the most prestigious of the Moroccan rugs the Berber rug perfectly combines modern day minimalism with authentic tribalism. A great candidate to tie in with most colour schemes, this rug will add warmth and luxuriousness to any room.
